Suggested Wintertime Books for Children

Even if you live in a warmer than normal climate with no snow, these books are fun.  There is a whole new world that exists because of snow.

The Mitten, by Jan Brett, is a classic Ukranian folktale picture book that children are sure to enjoy.  When Nicki drops one of his new white mittens in the snow, he doesn’t even know it is missing.  One by one, the woodland animals, each one bigger than the last, discover the mitten and crawl inside, hoping to make it their home.

There Was a Cold Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow, by Lucille Colandro, is a twist on the familiar tale of “There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly.”  She swallows everything from snow to a hat, coal, etc.  The story has rhyming text and funny illustrations that appeal to young readers, and, there’s a surprise at the end!

Katy and the Big Snow, by Virginia Lee Burton, is a Caldecott Medal Winner.  It is about Katy, a brave and never-tiring tractor, who pushes a bulldozer in the summer and a snowplow in the winter, making it possible for the townspeople to do their jobs.  Katy finally gets her chance to shine when a blizzard blankets the city and everyone is relying on Katy to help dig out.  Children will admire Katy’s “chug, chug, chug,” endurance.

Stella, Queen of the Snow, by Marie-Louise Gay, is another book about snow.  Winter was never so fun as in this book where Sam makes his very first snowman.  He has lots of questions to ask Stella, such as “Where do snowmen sleep? Can you eat a snowflake? Do snow angels sing?”  And Stella knows all the answers.  Sam and Stella build a gigantic snowman, go sledding and skating, and make beautiful snow angels in a fluffy, white magical world of snow.  This is a wintertime book that all children will enjoy.

Last, but not least, among the snow-themed books I suggest, is my poem called “Snowy-Day Friend” which can be found in my book, Butterflies, Bears and Other Poems for Children.  My poem has a very appealing snowman illustration to accompany it.  The poem explains the steps to building a snowman and is a great way to teach sequencing skills to children.  Kids will love reading how to build a snowy day friend!
